Supervisor Parks called a Town Hall meeting in Newbury Park to provide outreach to the community and increase public participation. She is looking at starting a Municipal Advisory Council there which would make it the third such council in her district and the fifth Municipal Advisory Council in the county. The citizen councils have proven to be very effective and are provided at no extra cost to taxpayers because they are run by volunteers and coordinated with existing office staff. More...

Supervisor Parks participates annually in the fundraising walk for the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill. She represents the Board of Supervisors on the County's Mental Health Board and has worked to establish treatment and placement options for the mentally ill. Her article on “The Mentally Ill in Our Jails” brought attention to the need to address this important issue. Efforts are now underway to provide residential crisis housing and treatment alternatives to jail. More...
Quick action by first responders helped save lives in the La Conchita landslide. Public safety personnel from numerous agencies responded, as they do during floods, fires and earthquakes. As Chair of the Ventura County Disaster Council Supervisor Parks led coordinating efforts for emergency preparedness, rapid response, and recovery, which are hallmarks of the County's emergency response. 2009 marked the opening of Santa Rosa Equestrian Park, a park that had been on the drawing board for 35 years until Supervisor Parks was elected and moved for its completion. Protecting the land that separates the cities in Ventura County is a key component of the County's General Plan which calls for urban development to occur in the cities and not in the unincorporated areas of the county. This protects the farmland and open space that make our county such a desirable place to live and work. As funding for government services declines, the County is looking at new ways to increase services without increasing costs. Several years ago the Fire District began a program of placing paramedic trucks in fire stations. In the coming years, the County will have paramedics at more fire stations to increase service levels without additional capital outlay. More...
Protecting open space benefits natural systems and stops urban sprawl. Supervisor Parks helped lead a fifteen year effort to protect Ahmanson Ranch which culminated in the land being purchased for parkland. Citizen volunteers play an important role by being prepared and assisting others in emergencies. During large scale emergencies there will not be enough fire engines or police cars to go to everyone's home. Training citizens to assist is the focus of new funding provided to the Ventura County Fire District to increase Community Emergency Response Training (CERT). Supervisor Parks was able to assist areas in her district through a grant program that provided local emergency supplies. More...
Supervisor Parks was the keynote speaker at the 2009 Ventura County Sheriff's Academy graduation.  She complimented the officers for being selected to the Academy and successfully completing the rigorous training.  She told them they were taking on one of the most important roles of government-- being an arm of the law.
